From Knowledge@Wharton: “Women business leaders and Wharton experts say the workplace would probably function very differently — and have a different look and feel — if it were built by and for women.”
What would it look like? Let me summarize: Not Profitable
Seriously - we’re trying to creat/sustain jobs and somehow it would be better for women if there were:
…koi ponds with running water, a farmer’s market, onsite chefs and bicycles that allow for quick jaunts between buildings. “We created a workplace that has a lot of light … and open space.”
When are we going to wake up and realize that the wonders of flex-time, shared jobs and on-site child care are just about as relevant in today’s economy as the McMansion, the SUV and limitless plastic bags at the grocery store. It’s about managing resources and since most of us are going to drop out of the workforce as soon as our maternity leave is up - there’s no rational incentive or reasonable rate of return to make these investments. Because you’d still put your own money in equities that returned the profits to you instead of putting into an on-site childcare center.
Sorry ladies, there is no Tooth Fairy and there is no “If the workplace was more friendly…” alternative in the future. But I doubt you’d stick around anyway…
